The brief:

Dorchester Primary School in Hull needed to create additional places for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Through the remodelling and upgrade of the existing facilities, Esteem was able to undertake construction works through the summer holidays in readiness of the new academic year.

The solution:

The primary school was seeking to achieve a welcoming, interesting and engaging area for Key Stage 1 & 2 SEND pupils.

Working in partnership with Sewell Construction, a full remodelling of the area was undertaken across several areas, works comprising a complete strip out of existing facilities, asbestos removal, and the creation of two new sensory rooms, a new teaching kitchen and changing facility.

The work included renewal of flooring, suspended ceilings, kitchen areas, toilets, doors and internal partitions, as well as decoration and finishes.

The challenges:

Challenges of this project included:

  • Meeting and exceeding the needs, regulations and standards for SEND spaces.
  • Completing all work during the summer holidays, so the school was ready for students to return at the start of the academic year.
  • Curating appropriate lighting, so the light met standards, but wasn’t over-bright or overwhelming for students with additional sensory challenges.

The results:

The new SEND areas at Dorchester Primary School were completed on time, with students able to use them when they returned to school in September.

The new space has created 20 additional places for students with special educational needs and disabilities, helping give all children access to the best educational facilities where they can learn and develop.
