The Brief:

This exciting project saw the centralisation and rationalisation of existing local authority leisure facilities into one, state-of-the-art, versatile community asset. The existing leisure centre was outdated and the swim provision was centred around a splash pool and water slides. With the closure of the nearby East Hull Baths, the client was seeking a diverse multi-use centre for a host of leisure-users.

The Solution:

The entire frontage of the centre was changed and extended, creating an entirely new roadside appearance. Contained within the new front extension was a new 25-metre six lane pool, a 10-meter beginners pool, a new reception area, cafeteria, sauna, steam room and new additional changing facilities designated for the 2 new leisure pools. The existing car park to the front of the building was utilised to deliver the extension, requiring the provision of a new larger car park to the rear.

The Delivery:

Whilst delivering vibrant and state-of-the-art new-build facilities, careful integration of the existing facilities had to be considered to achieve the desired result throughout. Extensive refurbishment of the existing communal areas, changing rooms and gym facilities were completed, in addition to a virtual spin studio.

The Results:

  • An extensive leisure asset with 4 individual swimming pools
  • Centralised provision of recreational services with reduced whole-life costs for the authority
  • On-time and on-budget delivery
  • An entire re-roof of the centre, including complex roof glazing over the existing pools was added to the scope during construction and accommodated within the original programme.
