Following the recent completion of Beverley Road Baths, work is set to begin in early 2022 on Albert Avenue Pools as part of the wider regeneration of leisure facilities across the city.

This £10.5m transformation of the Pools will see the facility’s historic much-loved lido reopen after 25 years, amongst other improvements, including:

  • Increased parking provision on the site of the old Mortuary
  • New two-storey Gymnasium
  • Refurbishment of the existing facilities, which include the two existing swimming pools

The lido:

A new lido will be constructed, which will include a splash pool for families to enjoy. The associated external areas will be newly landscaped to provide a relaxing and fun environment for visitors.

The new Gymnasium:

Works will transform the centre into a multi-use leisure complex in line with other Hull Culture & Leisure facilities in the city, and will include the gym on the ground floor, studio and supporting accommodation on the first.

The centre and car parking:

The existing centre will undergo a refurbishment, including the reception area, changing areas and former gym to create a welcoming environment for visitors.

The separate changing areas for the small pool will be retained and new changing areas will be created for the large pool to make more efficient use of the space, with the addition of a Changing Places changing facility and buggy store.

The building will be refurbished throughout, including new floor, wall and ceiling finishes to create a bright, vibrant and modern space. Externally, there will be upgrades to the existing cladding and roof areas, as well as resurfacing and expansion of the car park.

The site is adjacent to Kingston Kayak Club, which will remain in use throughout the contract period.

Hobson & Porter has been appointed to carry out the work due to their experience delivering leisure schemes of a similar nature across Hull and East Riding, including Woodford Leisure Centre, Beverley Road Baths, Haltemprice Leisure Centre, Hornsea Leisure Centre and Ennerdale Leisure Centre. Completion is expected mid 2023.

Formerly Newington Baths, Albert Avenue Pools opened on the site of the former Newington Water Works in 1908. The covered pools complex was built in Albert Avenue in 1933 retaining the outdoor swimming pool and converting this to the lido that is being remodelled today.
