Our construction partner Houlton has been working hard to improve the lives of children in the area, with members of their team giving up their time on a number of projects for Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University (HEYCU).
They supported the charity with their Blitz Experience Day. Children from Woodland Primary School in Hull had a guided tour of the city, exploring iconic buildings affected during the Blitz to learn more about Hull’s history. Then back at the KCOM Learning Zone, the pupils worked in small groups on projects about the Blitz. Riannon Speechley, Pre-Construction and Marketing Assistant at Houton, said: “Pupils reimagined the old Beverley Road cinema, which was bombed during the Blitz. Their creativity and ideas were inspiring.”
Houlton’s football team, the Houlton Has-Beens, also competed in a charity football match to raise awareness and support for HEYCU. Although they didn’t take away a trophy, it was a fantastic effort to help raise the profile of the charity.
Next up, Houlton will be hosting a careers day for HEYCU, in partnership with Hull Adult Training. The event will feature hands-on workshops on joinery, bricklaying, painting and decorating and health and safety, giving children the chance to explore the construction industry and spark interest in future career paths. They’ll also be helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds celebrate Christmas, sponsoring a festive breakfast for a class of primary school children and gifting Christmas presents to those who don’t receive much.
