NEED

Butterflies Nursery needed to be relocated from its no longer fit-for-purpose premises to a more suitable location that would enhance the children’s learning spaces, as well as accommodate additional numbers.

STRATEGY

Site searches were undertaken to determine a suitable location for Butterflies Nursery to relocate to. The strategy was to repurpose and modernise an existing unused space on the site of Priory Primary School, developing a scope of works and specifications to comply with the requirements of Ofsted, the Department of Health, and Local Authority.

IMPACT

Remodelled using best practice for modern nurseries, Butterflies Nursery now has a cohesive, open plan space with the option to divide into multiple learning spaces.

Using knowledge based upon similar projects, Esteem made recommendations to functionality and design to ensure best use of the space. The team created a more seamless flow within the building, developing a central foyer which branched off into multiple play zones to adhere to the needs of the nursey and accommodate soft and messy play, as well as wet areas and additional dining.

Incorporated into the design was the construction of a brand-new toilet block and domestic kitchen, so they do not have to rely on the adjacent school for catering.

External play spaces have also been improved, creating a play area with tarmacked sections, sand pits, building areas, and soft flooring in the centre for climbing frames.
